  This book was inspired

by the children of middle Tennessee.

  Can you believe it?

  I looked like a butterball

  when I was a baby.

At my new home, a lady scooped

  me into her lap.

  She was my new mommy.

“I’ll name you Chester,” she said.

  She rinsed me clean.

  She brushed my curly coat.

  She fed me every day.

I learned to sit. I learned to stay.

  I learned to come.

Sit, stay, and come aren’t just doggie tricks.

They stop me from running into the street.

I could get hurt out there!

As I grew big, I learned to be polite

  and follow rules.

But I still had time for fun!

  Mom let me run outside.

  Running makes me a strong

  and healthy dog.

And more and more, my mom lifted

  my floppy ear and whispered,

  “I love you.”

Oh no! One day when I was two

years old, another dog named Russell

  came to live with us.

  Can you believe it?

He was only one year old but

  he was bigger than me.

  I learned to share everything:

my dog food from the big bag,

  the rug by the couch,

even fetching my toy from the water.

  We’re waiting to fetch!

  Now we’re friends forever!

  Russell learned the rules, too.

  “Sit.”

  “Stay.”

  “Come.”

Mom still whispered in my ear, “I love you.”

  One day she whispered in

  Russell’s soft ear,

  “I love you, too.”

  Can you believe it?

When I was three years old

  a small kitten that purred

  needed a home, too.

  Kittie jumped on the bed.

  Kittie purred from the couch.

Kittie darted back and forth in the house!

  Mom said to me,

  “Chester, you are the oldest.

  You must …

set a good example for Russell

  and watch out for Kittie.

You dogs are so big and she’s so small!”

So, I share my bed with Kittie,

  and I nuzzle her when

  she purrs at me.

  Can you believe it?

Along the way, I paid attention,

listened, and was a good dog.

I learned to speak (woof, woof),

  spin, give a high five,

  play dead, and more.

  I took a test.

Now I am a therapy dog, too.

I go places with my mom

  and make people smile.

At libraries, I go for story times.

  Mom reads to children.

The books are so much fun!

  I go to schools.

  The children love to see

my happy face and wagging tail.

I get hugged while the children

  read, and count, and learn.

In nursing homes, old people who

forget or miss their pets call me

over to hug and pet me.

  I am happy to help.

I am five years old and

  all grown up now.

I sit and my mom lifts my ear.

  She whispers,

  “I love you.

  Look at you.

  You’re a wonderful dog!”

  Can you believe it?

  Me!

  Chester the Chesapeake.

  Woof. Woof.

  Oops…I mean, bye-bye.

  The end.

  For homeless dogs

  and the compassionate people

  who adopt them.

Russell and I sniffed the air.

We smelled a dog over the hills.

  Can you believe it?

A little lost dog roamed our golf course!

He begged the men for food and water.

Of course, Mom brought him home.

“We’ll name him Putt-Putt,” she said.

  Another brother? Wow!

  Just in time for summer.

  But …

  Putt-Putt liked to watch TV.

  After many hours,

  Putt-Putt whined,

  “I’m bored.”

Can you believe it? Bored? I

looked again for my gentle giant brother.

Russell, come help me. Let’s go

show Putt-Putt the joys of summer…

  like making new friends.

  Let’s visit a rapid river …

  which runs into a …Waterfall!

  Let’s go to the park.

  Russell, go show Putt-Putt

  the slippery slide.

  Russell will do anything!

Let’s go for a car ride.

  Putt-Putt, it’s magic!

Or go for a boat ride...

Russell, you can’t get off here!

  Help in the garden.

  Pull weeds.

  Or go swimming.

  Visit an old person and

  make them happy.

  Enjoy the sunshine.

I borrowed Russell’s super cool shades.

  Listen to music.

  B-I-N-G-O…B-I-N-G-O.

  Take a summertime nap.

Or do your brother a favor.

Go to the library and read a book …

  or two!

Pose for a summertime picture …

  … play ball

… and be sure to share.

Take a walk in the woods…

… and go get the mail.

  Play dress-up.

And finally, build a course for

  running and jumping.

Should we go under or over?

  Putt-Putt stretched next to me.

  “Thank you,” he barked.

  “I had a fun summer.”

  I heard Mom call.

  “Nice job,” she said.

She looked into my eyes. She didn’t

have to tell me. I love her, too.

  Can you believe it?

  Me!

  Chester the Chesapeake.

  The End.

  For the elderly who

  look forward to Chester’s

  visits week after week.

  Something magical happened

  outside while I dreamed.

When I woke up, I found my brothers.

  “Russell, get up lazybones.”

  “Putt-Putt, rise and shine.

  Let’s go see.”

We looked out the front door.

  Can you believe it?

A present for children and dogs –

  a fairyland of snow!

Before the sun popped up, we

went outside. The ground was one

  big white sheet of paper.

  Wait until Mom sees this!

  We watched the deer run

  into the woods,
br />   we saw a little bird keeping

  warm in the wintery weeds,

and our little squirrel who never

  moved wore a snow hat.

  When the bright orange sun

rose over the hill, we trotted

  down the lane. We made

  paw tracks in the snow.

  With the sunshine,

  the snow began to glisten.

This all fell from the sky!

  The bushes, and the trees,

  and our house

  sparkled like stars.

At the end of the lane,

we sat on the feathery snow.

But, we were missing a dog!

  Where’s Putt-Putt?

  Putt-Putt blended into

I wanted to play but Russell

  and I smelled something nice.

We had to nibble on the tasty ice.

And while I dug up crunchy leaves,

Russell acted like a watch dog.

He wore snow on his nose!

  Mom caught up with us.

I pleaded with my eyes …

  we wanted to catch snowballs.

Mom threw a high one my way.

  Watch this Russell.

  I can fly!

  I had so much fun,

  I laughed with glee.

  We thanked Mom.

We took turns giving her kisses.

  Mom asked me,

“Do you want to take a snow break

and go to work?” She knows I love

  being a therapy dog.

  Russell and Putt-Putt were sad.

“We’ll play some more later,” I woofed.

They waited for me to come home.

  Can you believe it?

  At the nursing home,

I saw more snow on a

  nice lady’s blanket.

My friend Jean wanted to go

out in the snow with me.

  She made snowmen when

  she was a little girl.

When I got home, we all went

outside again. The sun was setting

  down by the lake.

  We played hide-and-seek,

  and played tag.

  Putt-Putt ran the fastest

because he’s only three years old.

  The wind turned cold.

The icy snow burned my paws,

and it started to snow again.

“Let’s go get warm inside,” Mom said.

I watched my brothers go safely

  into the driveway.

We were happy to be home.

  “You were good boys today,”

  Mom said by the garage.

She gave us our favorite treats

  – carrots.

  After dinner,

  Russell and Putt-Putt nestled

  into bed all tuckered out.

  I fell fast asleep.

  I dreamed of my brothers,

  and my Kittie sister,

and another snowy day. And in

my sleep, I felt Mom pat my head.

  I love her, too.

  Can you believe it?

  Me!

  Chester the Chesapeake.
